If you’re immersed in the culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, you know the fall season brings the most vibrant energy of the year. Football games, tailgates, and the famed homecomings fill the calendar. It’s a time when students, alumni, and fans come together to celebrate sports and Black culture.
But fall also brings an increase in pan-respiratory viruses, like flu, COVID-19, and RSV, heightening the risk of serious illnesses. Given that the Black community is a high-risk population, it’s essential to have access to accurate information and resources to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
That’s why the Risk Less. Do More. campaign teamed up with the HBCU Tailgate Tour.
Bringing health into the mix of sports, community and culture, the Tailgate Tour made eight stops at HBCUs around the country. The tour kicked off at Norfolk State University then traveled to Alabama State University, Jackson State University, the Magic City Classic, North Carolina A&T University, Morehouse College, the Bayou Classic, and wrapped up at the MLK HBCU Invitational.
With a live DJ, music, healthy food samples, on-site vaccination activations, and health education resources, the tour administered a total of 216 vaccinations, helping attendees stay safe while celebrating school spirit. The campaign vaccinated students, alumni, and fans while providing crucial health information—all within a fun, community-centered atmosphere.
By blending health to the excitement of game days and tailgate traditions, the Risk Less. Do More. campaign and the HBCU Tailgate Tour empowered the HBCU community to make informed decisions and reduce the risks of seasonal illnesses this fall.
